Seedlings
By popular demand, we are starting a new feature, called "Seedling Photos." Intended as a tool to aid in early detection of what is good (the wildflowers) and what is not (the weeds), it will include as many of our listings as possible. The aforementioned reason is practical, for early weed detection; the second reason is that it's fascinating to observe the differences between species in cotyledon leaves, as well as the more obvious and well known (but not that well known) true leaves. Photos of early "true" leaves will also eventually be included.
Quick Botany Refresher: The cotyledon is the leaf or leaves that form part of the seed embryo. In some seeds (legumes like peas, beans, and lupines), they are storage organs from which food is drawn. The cotyledons of many seeds (most wildflowers) are the first part to appear above ground, where they develop chlorophyll, and photosynthesize. As the true leaves develop, the cotyledons are often shaded out.
