Plant Knowledge Among the Chumash People of Southern California
by Jan Timbrook, with botanical watercolors by Chris Chapman
This invaluable book is based on the voluminous notes of John Harrington, who worked with the Chumash for almost forty years during the early part of the twentieth century, as well as on information from contemporary Chumash informants and other resources. The well-written and easily comprehended individual entries have a satisfying completeness that is somewhat rare in tribal ethnobotanies.
As Timbrook says, “We are links in the chain of knowledge.” Her wide and generous perspective gives a unique flavor to this contribution to California’s ethnobotanical field.
I was having a difficult time finding the book, and I’m delighted to be able to make this classic available to our customers.
