This moisture-loving perennial has beautiful foliage, deep green compound leaves with silvery undersides, and attractive bright yellow flowers. The plant hugs the ground as it spreads through underground rhizomes. It is found in seasonal wetlands and moist meadows where its long red stems create interesting patterns as the plant spreads. It is seasonally dormant, completely disappearing in the end of summer, if not watered, then returning in early spring.
The root of this plant were a crucial part of the diet of Northwest coast native peoples, who farmed it in estuaries with springbank clover. Research on different uses of this plant is ongoing.
